How to beat condensation

How to beat condensation

Even new homes can suffer from condensation.

Condensation can lead to worse things than the need to mop your windows in the mornings. Condensation encourages mould growth on indoor surfaces and even on furniture. Mould issues can aggravate asthma and mould spores can also irritate your throat and lead to serious and permanent lung damage.

A family of four can create up to 20 litres of water per day inside homes according to Consumer NZ. Homes not coping with internal moisture can lead to a condensation problems. Condensation is the process where water vapour becomes liquid. Warm air that is too humid contacting cold surfaces will create condensation.

Why is condensation worse in some rooms than others?

Moisture moves around homes through a process called diffusion. Diffusion occurs if some part of your home has a higher moisture level than another part, such as the movement of moisture from the bathroom to the bedroom after a hot shower has filled the bathroom with steam.

Diffusion happens even if there is no air movement at all. Just as heat travels from a hot space to a cold space, even if it must go through a wall, water vapour will travel from a space with a high moisture concentration to a space with a lower moisture concentration, again, even if it has to go through a wall.

Cold air almost always contains less water than hot air, so diffusion usually carries moisture from a warm place to a cold place.

Homes can be built with materials that reduce condensation dramatically.

If the humidity within your home can be managed by your home’s structure, your home will not be fully reliant on mechanical ventilation to remove moisture and you’ll enjoy the benefits of comfort and healthy air without using much energy.

Premium Homes hygroscopic wall and ceiling structures use the natural properties of wool to encourage moisture vapour to pass harmlessly outside, always keeping you comfortable and your home healthy. This cost-effective approach to building avoids condensation while saving householders on heating and cooling bills.

Premium Homes achieves condensation management without the need for plastic wraps, which is better for our environment as well as for the comfort and wellbeing of people living in our homes.

Why wool insulation?

Why wool insulation?

Natural science that works for you and our planet

No other material, natural or man-made, has the qualities and adaptability of wool.

Wool is hygroscopic, enabling it to absorb and release water vapour. This natural phenomenon, unique to wool, distinguishes it from synthetic insulation. Insulation R-values are typically tested in dry laboratory environments and don’t model the moisture present in real-world conditions. What this means is that although R values of other insulation materials may look great on paper, their performance once in your wall or ceiling system is often a very different story. Many other insulation materials can release toxic vapours too, while wool filters your air.

The unique properties of wool insulation mean it excels in managing moisture while maintaining its thermal performance. This crucial benefit helps reduce the risk of moisture buildup, which can cause mould within your home.

Here’s the technical bit…Wool adsorbs water (That’s right – adsorbs – not absorbs). Once inside the fibre, there is a temporary chemical bond (hydrogen bond) attaching water molecules to the surfaces of inner structures of the fibre. Adsorbtion is exothermic, meaning that it releases heat back into your home just when you need it. Breaking the hydrogen bond and freeing the water molecule, desorption, requires heat. This provides free cooling as required. Wool insulation, when enabled by the right wall and ceiling linings works like wool clothing does. It keeps you warm in winter and cool in summer, just like your favourite merino tee shirt.

The structure of wool fibre delivers exceptional functional and technical performance, and you can also be confident that you’re making the right choice for the delicate ecosystem of our planet. The Foreverbreathe system combines wool insulation with wall linings and rigid air barriers that enable wool to perform at its best.

New requirements for homes are being phased in now

New requirements for homes are being phased in now

2030 isn’t far away

Don’t build a dinosaur!

The MBIE programme of change began in 2022 and all new homes will need to meet key milestones, just around the corner in 2030.

New Zealand has committed to net zero carbon emissions by 2050. The Government is developing an Emissions Reduction Plan which will set out the changes needed to allow New Zealand to meet its climate change goals. In addition to building homes with lower carbon emissions the government is looking to ensure New Zealand’s buildings are resilient enough to withstand changing climate conditions.

The Building for Climate Change programme is run by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment to reduce emissions from constructing and operating buildings, and to make sure our buildings are prepared for the future effects of climate change.

If you’re looking to build now it makes sense to take these requirements into consideration. Otherwise, what would your resale value look like just a few short years into the future compared to other, more compliant homes?

If you’re thinking about building, consider the new requirements now to enhance your resale value. Don’t build a dinosaur, talk to us and reduce your energy bills while living in a better, more comfortable environment.
