Keep our increasing fire risk in mind when you’re building
Now is the time to think about the future
To meet 2030 and 2050 building requirements, the MBIE Building for Climate change work programme, in place now, states ‘Buildings are resilient to the impacts of climate change’.
One of those impacts is increased fire risk. It’s Time Canterbury reports that ‘As our region gets hotter, it will also get drier and windier.’ They say this combination means that Canterbury has an increasing risk of wildfire over the next century, and the fire season, which is traditionally been the summer months, could become longer.
We clearly remember the 2017 Port Hills fire that swept across a massive 2000 hectares of the Port Hills, destroying eleven homes and impacting too many lives in the process.
Let’s start doing what we can by building with materials that are more fire resistant.
Foreverbreathe Homes by Premium Homes incorporate Magnum Board as a Rigid Air Barrier (instead of ply, plastic wrap or building paper) and as a wall board (instead of Gib board). Magnum board is classified as non-combustible. With our Foreverbreathe specification, two layers of Magnum board encase a thick layer of wool insulation. Wool is renowned for its ability to resist flame. This wall structure made from natural materials and no toxic or flammable building components is the core of all Foreverbreathe homes by Premium Homes.
