Our Story

Our story FROM CONCEPTION TO COMPLETION. Founders, Andrew and Kelly were concerned about the number of poorly built homes during the boom of 2003-2008 and felt they could improve the process and outcome for homeowners. With Andrew’s extensive building knowledge and overseas construction experience combined with Kelly’s trade experience, business knowledge and understanding of management systems, they had the right recipe for a better building company.

Located at 7 Essex Street, Linwood, Christchurch 8011, Premium Homes has established itself as an award-winning leader in eco-home building. Founded by childhood friends Andrew and Kelly, the company emerged from a shared concern over the prevalence of poorly constructed homes during the 2003-2008 housing boom. Combining Andrew’s extensive building knowledge and international construction experience with Kelly’s trade expertise and business acumen, they set out to redefine the home-building process.

2007 History

Andrew Breward and Kelly Wood founded Premium Homes in 2007, having identified an opportunity in the market for homes built to a higher standard of workmanship.

2007 Company Formation

Shortly after the company was formed, the global financial crisis hit. Premium Homes kept its doors open by building new homes of quality.

Working with experienced building contractors, they gained outstanding results.

Having put systems and processes into place to assure consistent quality, the next step forward was to improve the performance of homes.

2018 - Foreverbreathe

Premium Homes completed their first Foreverbreathe home in 2018. This home achieved recognition through the Master Builders Association House of the Year Sustainable Home Award. This home also earned a Homestar rating of 8 from the NZ Green Building Council.

The team at Premium Homes is led by Kelly and Andrew, childhood friends turned business partners.

The Premium Homes team, made up of Quality Master Builders, Apprentices, Project Managers, Quantity Surveyors and experienced sales and admin staff, have the expertise and resources to cater for all size jobs no matter how big or complex.

Andrew Breward,

director

Andrew is a Master Builder with over 30 years’ experience building state of the art projects. His experience has even reached international fame – building houses for Hugh Grant and Seal in the United Kingdom.

Andrew specialises in both residential and commercial builds and played a key role in achieving a 6 Green Star rating on a commercial build. Continuing to quantify the performance of his builds, Andrew has recently overseen a Premium Homes residential project that earned 8 stars.

Andrew is a family man, spending his spare time with his family, fishing, mountain biking, diving and playing squash.

Kelly Wood,

director

Kelly has been in the building industry since 1987, initially as an electrician and then extensively in automated systems. He has a strong background in home development and business management. He’s been developing houses since the 90’s, and his experience is obvious in his stunning properties.

Looking after clients’ needs is one of Kelly’s top priorities – he loves giving advice on where clients should and shouldn’t invest their building budget. His goal is to create the best outcome for your home – with your budget and time frame in mind.

Kelly is a family man and his family values are evident when it comes to working with clients. In his spare time, Kelly enjoys his time with family, mountain biking and fishing.

Grant McSherry,

sales & marketing manager

Inspired by the process of designing his own home, Grant joined the building industry in 2012 and has since helped Cantabrians to design and build new homes. An opportunity to become part of the Premium Homes team in 2018 was a natural progression for Grant, who will be one of the first team members you’ll come across when you're looking to build.

Originally from the North Island, Grant says home is firmly in Canterbury, where he's lived since 2000.

Outside of work, Grant loves our environment, getting out and about with his camera. A keen artist in the past, Grant is known by many as an oil painter. Among other things, he enjoys loud Hi-Fi music and spending time with his wife Michelle and Otis, their Newfoundland canine family member.

Dave Richards,

project manager

Dave has a solid background in building and has worked on many prestigious architectural projects.

Dave joined the Premium Homes in 2015 and has led many interesting projects, including the regional win for Premium Homes in the 2021 Master Builders Awards. Even though Dave has accomplished much in his work he says the best part of his job is the people, both clients and workmates.

Outside of work, when not spending time with his wife Olivia and daughter Lily Dave enjoys hunting and fishing.

STEVE GYDE,

PROJECT MANAGER

Building is a big passion for Steve, which explains his 25 years to date in the building industry.

Having transitioned from being on the tools to project management, Steve joined the team at Premium Homes in 2023 to further his career experience.

Outside of building Steve is a sports enthusiast playing softball, golf and darts. He also enjoys diving, car racing and rugby league. Steve likes to make the most of the outdoor environment during his time off too.

To wind down Steve enjoys good food along with a nice dram with family and friends as well as spending time with his three-year-old black Labrador.

Jamie Day,

senior quantity surveyor

Jamie has been a quantity surveyor since 2015, with a focus on architectural new builds.

Outside of work, you’ll probably find Jamie either on a ball court or cricket field as he enjoys playing and coaching basketball and cricket.

Jamie also likes to spend time with his two children, who are 12 and 11 and also into sports.

Kelvin Gao,

quantity surveyor

Kelvin changed his career path from working within the Chinese manufacturing industry to becoming part of the New Zealand construction industry in 2017, and he joined Premium Homes in 2019 after gaining his NZ Diploma in Quantity Surveying. Kelvin’s longer-term goal is to become a building economist.

Beside expanding his knowledge of construction techniques, Kelvin enjoys the Kiwi culture. When he’s not spending time with his family Kelvin likes aerobic activities such as hiking, swimming and long-distance running.

Aiden Cheng,

quantity surveyor

Aiden joined the building industry during 2011, while living in Taiwan.

On moving to NZ, he continued to pursue his passion through studying construction management and quantity surveying, where he earned diplomas from Ara in Christchurch.

In his own time, Aiden loves water sports, particularly surfing and diving.

Kathy Webb,

office administrator

Kathy joined the company as Accounts Administrator in July 2017 to take care of Accounts Receivable / Payable, Payroll etc.

She lives in Clarkville, has 15 horses (gallopers) who are in various states of training, from 2 year olds through to retired racehorses.

Weekends see Kathy & her Sharpei dog (Ellie) down at the Waimak river along the many walking tracks.

As homeowners of the 2021 Registered Master Builders award winning home, we would like to say we are extremely proud and grateful to the team at Premium Homes. Andrew stood by us through two and a half years of difficult times while we negotiated a successful resolution with our insurance company, which enabled us to manage our own repair.

As this was Phillipa’s family home we wanted to preserve and enhance many of its original features while creating something new and modern.

When we saw the completed build for the first time it was with some well earned awe at the quality of build and craftsmanship, all the little details that couldn’t be captured in photos were realised and we learned how lucky we were to have chosen Premium Homes”

We adore our house Premium Homes built for us in Castle Hill Village. In our search for a building company that could build in a remote location at a high elevation and wind zone, Premium Homes caught our eye with their Healthy Homes building philosophy. They exceed expectations creating a healthier, stronger and more energy efficient house. We were excited by the use of wool insulation and magnum board (in place of fiberglass and Gib) and it has proven its worth in reducing noise, keeping the air clean and feeling fresh and the house breathes not getting too hot nor too cold. Premium Homes were able to effectively go through the build process whilst we were in Australia during COVID times and unable to visit site. No corners were cut and any issues and decision making requirements were communicated and dealt with effectively. When we saw the completed build for the first time it was with some well earned awe at the quality of build and craftsmanship, all the little details that couldn’t be captured in photos were realised and we learned how lucky we were to have chosen Premium Homes. To us, the little extra cost in building a healthy home is well worth it. We are so proud of our house we would love to show it to anyone who is interested in building a healthy home. Who wants to build to the bare minimum requirements when going a little further to improve makes such a big difference? building healthy homes can only improve NZ living and we would now never build any other way. Castle Hill

We planned to build a healthy home based on the ancient Indian science of home building (Vastu Sastra), with modern NZ specs, and of course within a budget! Premium Homes met all our requirements. During the very early stages when we lived out of town we were guided through the whole process, from planning to final hand-over.

Groundwork began two days ahead of our timeline and from there construction progressed quickly, with the team making sure all the Vastu aspects were carried out with utmost attention to detail. As with any construction process, we wanted to improvise a few things impromptu. Premium Homes provided insight and were flexible to accommodate these changes. It is also important to emphasise that Premium Homes have a very impressive line-up of sub-contractors, who were friendly and proficient.

Having moved in, the COVID-19 lockdown was a great opportunity to evaluate the performance of the house, and we came to appreciate the workmanship and the healthy aspects of the house.

Overall, when the builders treat your dream project as theirs, the end result is remarkable. The team at Premium Homes are a trustworthy lot.
